Altitude slaps you on arrival: 3,400 m and climbing, headaches guaranteed if you rushed from Lima. Once it passes, Cusco unfolds as a strange collision of Inca stonework, colonial churches, and aggressive tourist commerce. Every second doorway is a tour agency selling Machu Picchu packages, Rainbow Mountain day trips, or Sacred Valley combis. The backpacker infrastructure is the deepest in Peru, which means both convenience and saturation.

3-5 nights in city; add 4-5 for Inca Trail/Salkantay
Hard to skip as a gateway, but minimize city time if tourist saturation grates. Fly in, acclimatize one night, head straight to Sacred Valley or a trek.

Direct flights from Lima land in just over an hour (LATAM, Sky, JetSmart, 150-400 PEN depending on timing). The airport sits 15 min from the center by taxi (15-20 PEN, negotiate or use InDrive). Overnight buses from Lima take 20-22 hours (Cruz del Sur cama 130-200 PEN), from Arequipa 10 hours, from Puno 6-7 hours. Peru Hop stops here. The bus terminal (Terrapuerto) is south of center, 10-min taxi. From Bolivia: cross at Desaguadero or Copacabana, bus via Puno to Cusco same day. Many travelers fly in to avoid altitude shock from long bus routes.
Dry season May-Sep is prime time: clear skies for trekking, cold nights (0-5C), warm sunny days. Jun-Aug is peak tourist season with highest prices and crowds. Inti Raymi festival (Jun 24) fills every bed. Shoulder months Apr-May and Sep-Oct offer fewer crowds with mostly dry weather. Wet season Nov-Mar brings daily afternoon downpours, muddy trails, and the Inca Trail closes all February. Christmas and New Year are also busy.
ATMs everywhere downtown (BCP max 700 PEN withdrawal). Tourist restaurants accept cards with 3-5% surcharge. Altitude is the main practical challenge: drink coca tea, avoid alcohol on day one, walk slowly. Pharmacies sell soroche pills cheaply. WiFi is solid in hostels and cafes. The tourist police office on Plaza de Armas handles theft reports in English.
Tourist center is safe by day. At night, stick to well-lit streets between San Blas and Plaza de Armas. Muggings cluster on quiet streets walking to nightclubs on the outskirts after midnight, especially around Calle Procuradores (Gringo Alley) late at night. Drink spiking happens at some bars. Common scams: fake tour agencies, inflated taxi prices, unsolicited guides at ruins demanding payment.
