Unhurried colonial city energy. Rooftop terraces facing volcanoes, backpackers comparing Colca trek prices over cheap set lunches.

White volcanic sillar stone glowing against a dry blue sky, three volcanoes framing the city, and a food scene that rivals Lima without the chaos. Arequipa sits at 2,335 m, low enough to skip serious altitude adjustment but high enough for cool evenings. The colonial center is compact and walkable, monasteries and plazas filling a few pleasant hours, but the real draw is what leaves from here: Colca Canyon treks, condor viewpoints at Cruz del Condor, and the route south toward Puno.

2-4 nights; add 2 for Colca Canyon trek
Skip if choosing between here and Cusco on a tight timeline. Cusco has more iconic sights. Skip the canyon if you are already doing heavy trekking in Huaraz.

Most arrive by overnight bus from Lima (14-16 hours, Cruz del Sur or Oltursa, 80-130 PEN for semi-cama). From Cusco it is 10 hours by bus through high passes, spectacular scenery. From Puno, 5-6 hours by bus (30-50 PEN). Domestic flights from Lima land in 1.5 hours (LATAM, often 100-250 PEN booked early). The bus terminal is 15 minutes by taxi from the center (8-10 PEN). Peru Hop stops here on the southern loop. Colectivos connect to Chivay for the canyon.
Dry and sunny year-round in the city (300+ days of sun). Colca Canyon treks best May-Nov. Rainy season Dec-Mar brings afternoon showers to the canyon but the city stays mostly dry. Peak tourist months Jul-Aug fill hostels. Shoulder months Apr-May and Sep-Oct offer ideal conditions with fewer crowds. Condors are visible year-round at Cruz del Condor but thermals are best on clear mornings.
ATMs line the plaza (BCP, Interbank, Scotiabank). Visa cards work at most restaurants and hostels. Internet is reliable in the center, coworking spaces exist near the university. Altitude is mild but still above 2,000 m, hydrate. SIM cards available at Claro shops on Calle Mercaderes. Laundry services everywhere for 5-8 PEN per kilo.
Generally safe for backpackers. The center and San Lazaro are fine day and night. Avoid the bus terminal area after dark on foot. Occasional bag-snatching reported on quiet streets. Taxi scams exist but InDrive works here. Standard precautions: no flashy jewelry, keep phone in front pocket in markets.
