Vibe
Working-mining-town energy with a quiet tourist core. Small subdued hostel scene, cold nights that keep people indoors early, and conversations dominated by mine-tour debriefs.
Pulling route notes, destination cards, map points, and seasonal planning data.
[ 1 - 2 days ]
Cold, dusty, and historically dense. Potosi sits at 4,090 m, the highest major city in the world, built on the silver that funded the Spanish Empire. Two main pulls: Cerro Rico mine tours (still active, ethically complex, physically demanding) and the Casa de la Moneda mint museum. Most travelers slot 1 to 2 days between Uyuni and Sucre. The city is functional rather than pretty; the weight here is historical, not scenic.

1-2 days; a single overnight between Uyuni and Sucre
Skip if working-mine tourism feels ethically uncomfortable or if you cannot handle 4,090 m after struggling in La Paz. Bus straight Uyuni to Sucre instead.

4-hour scenic day bus from Uyuni is the standard approach. Do NOT take the rapiditos (shared minivan taxis) on the Potosi-Sucre route; drivers speed aggressively on mountain curves. Full-size coaches from Sucre take 3 to 4 hours and are safe. 10 to 11 hour overnight from La Paz. Terminal is in the lower city; taxi or micro to the historic center.
Dry season May to October has clear views and stable mine-tour schedules; June to August is freezing at night, often below zero. Wet season is warmer but mine tours and onward buses occasionally cancel in storms. Fiesta del Espiritu (late June) and Toy Toy (August) pack out hostels.
ATMs around Plaza 10 de Noviembre. Cash is standard. Heating is rare in budget rooms; pack thermals and a beanie for 4,090 m nights. Mine tours run 80 to 120 BOB via agencies on Calle Bustillos; helmets, boots, and overalls provided. Wifi is slow even in nicer spots.
Mine tours carry real risk: dust, dynamite blasts nearby, and low oxygen at 4,200 m inside the shafts. Ask the agency about safety protocols before booking. Do not enter with respiratory issues or claustrophobia. Standard pickpocket caution at the bus terminal. Avoid rapiditos to Sucre.
